How to get closer to incredible photos on your wedding day

Pre-wedding & engagement shoots with your wedding photographer

How would you like a guarantee that your wedding photographs will be incredible? Unfortunately they don’t exist, but a pre-wedding shoot is the next best thing.

For many people the only time they employ the services of a professional photographer is at their wedding. If their wedding photographs are important to them couples will spend a great deal of time choosing who will shoot their wedding and are willing to spend large sums of money to make sure it is done well.

Once you have chosen your wedding photographer, it is worth knowing that in order make the most of your wedding day photography there needs to be some sort of rapport between yourselves and the photographer. A great wedding photographer will always deliver great photography but their best work will be with couples where a relationship has developed.

The majority of couples will meet their photographer only once while deciding who will shoot their wedding and perhaps again at the pre-wedding consult if there is one.  The next time they meet and the first time they are photographed is on the day of the wedding.  The chances of having built a meaningful rapport are minimal and this is why a photography session before the wedding can mean the difference between good photographs and amazing photographs.

There are several reasons why this is the case.

  • The couple and the photographer get to spend time together. Talking in between shooting helps everyone to get to know each other. The photographer also gets to see how you respond to each other. There’s nothing worse than trying to get touchy feely photographs when the couple are not touchy feely types.
  • Couples get to spend time in front of a camera, which can be an uncomfortable situation for many people.  It can be hard to relax and act naturally which leads to stiff and awkward photographs. A pre-wedding shoot can help reduce camera anxiety allowing the couple to be more natural on their wedding day.
  • Seeing fantastic photographs of yourselves gives you confidence that your wedding photographs will be equally lovely. It’s one less thing to worry about on your wedding day.
  • You get to see and experience how the wedding photographer works which gives you an idea of what to expect on the day.
  • It allows the wedding photographer to see how the couples look being photographed.  If the photographer notices that there are any angles or lighting that doesn’t work for you, that can be fixed on your wedding day.  The photographer will also find out how much direction you need to look your best.
  • Last but not least of all, it’s also a great deal of fun.

At the end of the shoot couples will have lots of images from which to use for various purposes such as, invitations, guest books or enlarged prints, as well as just having some great photos of the two of you.

Some people are natural in front of the camera most of us are not. For people whose wedding photographs are important to them it is a good idea to invest the extra time and money in having a pre-wedding shoot. Ultimately it will lead to better wedding photographs and these are memories that will be treasured for a lifetime so a pre-wedding shoot or engagement shoot is a great investment.
